PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

   Scope of this project is to compile a database of historical earthquake occurred on Romanian territorry and  transborder zones, with the aim of providing a robust, homogeneous dataset, useful for long term seismicity and seismic hazard assessment, result which will be obtained through the knowledges contribution and researchers experience from the frame of partenership, which it will lead to the creation of some conditions for a good cooperation between the research-development institutes from this project.Within this project, there will be considered especially the records about the earthquakes from written documents found in public and universitary  libraries , museums, ecleziastical institutions. The information regarding the historical earthquakes are made of compilations of the primary historical sources, macroseismic questionnaires, seismological bulletins, etc. Also, for the beginning period of the instrumental seismology there will be taken into consideration the instrumental data with the purpose of achieving a combined and continue quantification for eliminating some uncertainties.

   In this project the seismic data are made of macroseismic information obtained by the convesion of the historical records about the earthquakes in terms of macroseismic intensity using the prescriptions of the macroseismic intensity scale MSK- 64. The achievement of this activity is necessary because the macroseismic methods in seismology have already been neglected, although they offer us a unique connection between the instrumental data and the substantial observation set over the  earthquakes occurred in the past (before the 20th century).

SCHEDULE:

Stage 1:

Documentation about sources that contain information regarding the paleoseismicity and historical seismicity for the Romanian territory and for the transborder zones. The evaluation and correlation of these data with the existing primary datasets.

   Time period:1.08.2007-14.12.2007

Stage 2:

Serious investigations about the significant historical earthquakes to obtain a more real image of the seismicity evolution of the Romanian territory and of the transborder zones.

   Time period: 15.12.2007-30.11.2008

Stage 3:

The achievement of the macroseismic database.

   Time period: 1.12.2008-30.11.2009

Stage 4:

The integration of the complex information obtained for the accomplishment of the historical earthquakes catalogue completeness  and the  elaboration of the maps with maximum observed intensities.

   Time period: 1.12.2009-30.07.2010

 RESULTS:

Stage 1:

Documentation about sources that contain information regarding the paleoseismicity and historical seismicity for the Romanian territory and for the transborder zones. The evaluation and correlation of these data with the existing primary datasets

OBJECTIVES:

 Project manager:

  • The achievement of a preliminary catalogue for the historical earthquakes occurred on the Romanian territory and the transborder zones;

  • The identifying of all the recent studies from the historical Seismology domain which contributed to the knowledge of the historical seismicity of the Romanian territory;

  • Studies on some historical earthquakes occurred on the Romanian territory and the transborder zones;

  • The clasifying of the sources/studies, which contain information about historical earthquakes,  according to the type and their quality;

  • The preliminary interpretation/ processing of the data, withdrawn from the historical documents.

 Partner 1:

  • Research on the old Romanian books which are held in custody in the Patriarchal repository;

  • Bibliographic description of the items in which the notes about earthquakes have been identified;

  • Identification of earthquake noting, transliteration and translation into Romanian.

 Partner 2:

  • Obtaining a selection from the geological publications of all types of paleodynamic rock textures apt to be of paleoseismic nature.

  • Systematization of studies concerning the systems of ruptural dislocations and of those connected with neotectonics.
